Patriarch Porfirije and Cardinal Nemet appeal for an end to clashes and violence
The Serbian Patriarch Porfirije called for an end to all conflicts and the rejection of words and actions that cause pain and wounds to others, stressing that nothing is more destructive than hatred, division and violence among brothers, and that nothing is more precious than peace and fraternal lov
“With pain and deep concern, we look at the unrest and conflicts that in recent days have shaken our cities, our homes, our families. I appeal to everyone – without exception – to stop all conflict and reject words and deeds that cause pain and wounds to others,” the Patriarch said.
He emphasized that “we have only one country, we have only one people, and we need one another,” and therefore, under no circumstances should we allow “ourselves to harm and persecute each other in the streets and squares,” the Serbian Orthodox Church stated.
The Archbishop of Belgrade and Cardinal Ladislav Nemet stated that the election of the new Pope Leo XIV went extremely quickly and that everyone was prepared to choose a man who would best suit the needs of the Catholic Church.
Students in blockade and citizens’ assemblies organized demonstrations on Wednesday evening in more than 20 cities across Serbia. Incidents occurred in Belgrade and Novi Sad.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, commenting on the protests in several locations across the country and the incidents in Novi Sad, said that “only thanks to the wisdom and patience of a vast number of citizens, peace was somehow preserved.”
The Archbishop of Belgrade, Cardinal Ladislav Nemet, stated that he was following “with deep concern the current situation in Serbia,” the unrest that has escalated into violence, and the prevailing tension in the country, calling on “all decision-makers and citizens to put an end to violence.”
“I am deeply convinced that every form of violence is unacceptable and leads only to greater suffering and division,” Nemet stressed in a statement published on the website of the Archdiocese of Belgrade.

He encouraged every individual to choose the path of dialogue, patience, and justice, as only in that way can genuine and lasting solutions to social problems be found.
“I believe that Serbia has the possibility of renewal if it rejects hatred and acts for peace and humanity. I appeal to everyone: now we need consistency, wisdom, and mutual respect for the future of our country,” Nemet said.
As he stressed, “the fate of Serbia is in the hands of us all – the citizens – let us choose the path of peace.”
