At a press conference, Nemet briefly reflected on the process of electing the new pope in Rome, in which he himself participated, saying that the preparation for the conclave lasted 12 days, that each cardinal spoke electronically, and that there were no time limits for speeches.
According to him, the main topic was the situation of the Catholic Church around the world and the challenges it faces, and what kind of profile would be most suitable for the current moment. Speaking about the future actions of Leo XIV, Nemet said that the pope has a role of "soft power," that his voice is generally weak, as could be seen in the late Pope Francis’s attempts to act on the war situations in Gaza and Ukraine.
According to Nemet, material aid is expected from Leo XIV for those regions—not only for the Catholic population, but for those who truly need help.
"I believe that is the greatest opportunity for the pope to help," said Nemet.
Nemet also emphasized that the new pope had very little contact with Orthodoxy and even asked him during their first dinner to explain the Orthodox calendar, but stated that he intends to continue working on unity, just as Pope Francis did.
"I think that now, as pope, he will definitely have to pay more attention to this matter and cooperate—which is very important to me—as well as the fact that the initial reactions from the Orthodox world have been very positive," Nemet pointed out.
Nemet also said that he has known the new pope from before, and that he is, in a positive sense, a true "American," and was even nicknamed "Yankee Latino." He added that he is very relaxed and calm, doesn’t make a fuss about anything, and doesn’t have any particular demands.
According to him, Leo XIV will continue to promote freedom of speech, is good with the media, speaks more briefly than Pope Francis, and uses fewer devotional expressions.
