"It is very likely that the level will be somewhere around 10 to 15 percent. The fact is that free trade, as some Serbian advisors once believed might be possible, is no longer on the table. However, it’s also important to point out that if tariffs on Serbian goods were to exceed 15 percent, those goods would become less competitive compared to goods from countries that have secured lower tariff rates," our interlocutor explained.
He noted that even a one-percent tariff increases production costs, makes goods more expensive, and undermines competitiveness.
He added that the EU hopes this can be a first step toward reaching a better agreement in the coming years or even sooner, but acknowledged that the EU was forced to accept the terms set by the US.
"This is not a reciprocal agreement. The arrangement is more favorable for the United States, which is imposing tariffs on nearly all products from the EU, while many products exported from the US to the EU will not be subject to tariffs," Stanic explained.
He also stated that the EU has committed to purchasing energy and weapons from the US, as well as investing in the American economy.
