NIS Company Requests New Postponement of U.S. Sanctions and Issuance of License

The Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) submitted a new request to the U.S. Department of the Treasury on September 28th for the issuance of a special license that would delay the full implementation of sanctions and allow the company to continue its operational activities without interruption.

In the company's statement, it is noted that NIS has also submitted a supplemental request for removal from the SDN (Specially Designated Nationals) list.

It is further stated that this is a long and complex process, and that the initial request was sent on March 14th of this year.

Serbia’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Sinisa Mali, stated today that Serbia will fight to find a solution regarding the current situation with NIS, one that will not jeopardize the country's energy stability.

The beginning of the implementation of sanctions against NIS has been postponed until October 8th –9th .

According to the latest postponement, the sanctions against NIS were supposed to take effect on Wednesday, October 1st , however, after negotiations led by President Vucic, the U.S. side decided to extend the deadline by another eight days.

This is the seventh time the U.S. has postponed the implementation of sanctions against NIS.
