According to the statement published on the FSS website, Serbia still has a chance to qualify, and for that reason, Veljko Paunovic, together with his coaching staff, has agreed to lead the national team in the matches against England and Latvia.
The General Secretary of the Football Association of Serbia, Branko Radujko, emphasized that Paunovic accepted the call with full commitment and a strong desire to help the national team at a moment when qualification for the World Cup is still possible.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has removed former President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik, Serb member of the Presidency Zeljka Cvijanović, and Speaker of the National Assembly Nenad Stevandic from its sanctions list.
According to information obtained unofficially by Newsmax Balkans in Washington, the Serbian government is currently developing a plan to resolve the issue of the Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) and to have the company removed from the list of entities under U.S. sanctions.
“From the very first day, Veljko Paunovic has shown that the interests of the national team come before anything else. His priority was not the contract or financial terms, but to immediately make himself available to the Football Association of Serbia and take charge of the team at such an important time. He emphasized that he wants to direct all his energy toward the upcoming matches against England and Latvia, determined to fight as long as there is even the slightest chance of success. We believe that his arrival will motivate the players and lift the team’s spirit, so that we can try to turn things in our favor. We will not give up as long as there is even the smallest fraction of a chance. The results of these two matches will in no way affect Veljko Paunovic’s future status. We will continue discussions about his long-term contract after these matches, regardless of their outcome,” said Radujko.
Serbia will play England away in London on November 13th , and then face Latvia in their final qualifying match in Leskovac on November 16th .
Veljko Paunovic is a coach who, exactly ten years ago, led Serbia’s youth team to victory at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
