Fire at Retirement Home in Tuzla: 12 Residents Dead, Three Critically Injured

According to the latest official information, a total of 12 people lost their lives in a fire that broke out on Tuesday in part of the Retirement Home building in Tuzla, while 35 people sought medical assistance at the University Clinical Center in Tuzla.

The director of the University Clinical Center (UKC) in Tuzla, Sekib Umihanic, stated that in the first wave after the fire broke out on Tuesday in part of the Retirement Home building, 20 patients were admitted to the Pulmonology Clinic, five of whom are on respirators and in extremely critical condition.

"Of the 20 people treated, three are police officers, six are firefighters, and the rest are either residents or employees of the Retirement Home. One female patient passed away during the night at the Pulmonology Clinic. The remaining eight patients were admitted to the Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Clinic; five of them are on respirators and in extremely critical condition, mostly due to inhalation injuries from smoke", Umihanic told reporters in Tuzla.

The fire affected the seventh floor of the Retirement Home building.

The Chief Prosecutor of the Tuzla Canton Prosecutor’s Office, Vedran Alidzanovic, stated that autopsies of the deceased will be ordered during the day and conducted by forensic experts, while the public will be informed promptly about any new findings.

The director of the Retirement Home in Tuzla, Mirsad Bakalovic, has resigned from his position following the fire.
