Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad: We expect a public trial for the fall of the canopy
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad recalled that on September 16th , it brought charges against 13 defendants in connection with the fall of the canopy of the Railway Station in Novi Sad on November 1 last year, when 16 people were killed.
The indictment was brought against thirteen defendants due to reasonable suspicion that they have committed criminal acts that are legally qualified as serious acts against general security, the prosecutor's office announced.
The Prosecution states that it still expects that the indictment will enter into legal force as soon as possible for all the accused, which would enable a public trial for all accused persons.
"The prosecution once again expresses its position on the necessity of a public trial, where the evidence collected by the public prosecution in the investigation, as well as the evidence of the defense, would be presented in the presence of the public at the main trial, in order to determine the criminal responsibility of the accused", the prosecution emphasized.
Foreign Minister Marko Djuric stated that Serbia is unequivocally and firmly committed to joining the EU, which includes accepting the European Union’s foreign and security policy.
Former Minister of Construction Goran Vesic was questioned at the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime in connection with a financial investigation related to the reconstruction of the Railway Station building, where 16 people were killed and one was injured after the collapse of a canopy.
The indictment includes former Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic, former Acting general director of "Infrastructure of Railways of Serbia" a.d. J. T, former acting Assistant to the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure A. D., former General Director of "Serbian Railway Infrastructure" a.d. N. S, responsible designer of the building structure S. N, chief designer of the conceptual project M. J, chief designer of the project for the building permit Lj. M. M, rapporteur of the Republic Revision Commission M. S, person responsible for the technical control of the construction permit project J. S. M, persons responsible for the execution of construction works Z. S. M. and D. J, persons responsible for expert supervision over the execution of works M. G. and D. T.
They are suspected of criminal offenses that enabled the use of a public facility - the station building of the Railway Station in Novi Sad, wing B, even though construction work was underway and for which the facility was not issued a use permit, for a criminal offense related to the previous non-maintenance of the structure of the station building and for criminal offenses in the design and execution phase of the renovation of the Railway Station building in Novi Sad.
