The shutdown of production facilities at the Pancevo Oil Refinery has begun due to a shortage of crude oil for processing, which has arisen as a consequence of the sanctions imposed on NIS by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the company announced.

"The shutdown of processing units is being carried out according to the procedures applied during scheduled overhauls and is conducted in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Serbia, the company’s internal regulations, and the strictest environmental, safety, and occupational health standards", NIS stated.
Activities at the Pancevo Oil Refinery during the shutdown process have been organized in such a way that refinery units will be ready to restart as soon as conditions allow, that is, once information on the availability of crude oil is received.
Following the public bidding procedure, Ratel – the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services – has granted individual licenses to the operators Telekom Srbija, Yettel, and A1 Srbija, thereby meeting the conditions for the commercial provision of services using 5G.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that Serbia did not receive a positive decision from the United States regarding NIS and that the state has granted permission to shut down the refinery in Pancevo. He said that there are sufficient reserves of all oil derivatives until the end of January.
As stated, during the shutdown period, refinery employees will be engaged in tasks normally performed during planned unit outages. At the same time, NIS continues to supply the domestic market with petroleum products without interruption, thanks to previously secured reserves.
NIS expressed hope that regular operations at the Pancevo Oil Refinery will be restored as soon as possible.
"The company remains committed to efforts to preserve the social stability of its more than 13,500 employees and to being removed from the U.S. Treasury Department’s SDN list or obtaining a new specific license that would allow it to operate without hindrance, with strong support from the state authorities of the Republic of Serbia", the NIS statement said.
