Kristofer Hill: Milosevic Was Ready for Compromise in Bosnia, but Never for Kosovo
American diplomat Christopher Hill claims that former President of Serbia and the FRY Slobodan Milosevic was willing to compromise only in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, but never over Kosovo and Metohija.
Hill, a former U.S. ambassador to North Macedonia and Serbia and a member of Richard Holbrooke’s negotiating team, spoke in an interview for Euronews Albania about his role during the Kosovo crisis, negotiations with Slobodan Milosevic, and the trial of Hashim Thaçi.
He described Milosevic as a complex and unpredictable negotiator, "often cynical".
The Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, stated that Serbia has enough fuel oil for the entire heating season and told citizens not to worry and to trust the state.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic stated that the country has officially entered an election year today and that elections will be held within, at most, one year.
"He helped us in Bosnia, but he never accepted a compromise on Kosovo - he was not a reliable partner. Sometimes you don’t have many choices; they’re not ideal, but they’re what you have. I worked hard on a political solution after Rambouillet. I did not always succeed, but I gave my best. The use of force opens other problems, and I blame Milosevic for not wanting to work with us, but no one should be satisfied about the use of force", Hill stated.
He added that after Milosevic’s death, "it is easier to speak about leaders who are no longer with us".
Hill also said that the U.S. has made significant progress in relations with Serbia, but that a major problem remains Serbia’s energy dependence on Russia, which, he claims, "uses energy as a weapon".
"It is important to help Serbia move away from this threat. I have also worked on Serbia-Ukraine relations, but there are areas where work needs to continue," the former U.S. ambassador to Serbia said.
