Serbian Parliament Adopts a Package of Judicial Laws Proposed by SNS MP Ugljesa Mrdic
Members of the Serbian Parliament adopted amendments and supplements to a package of judicial laws proposed by Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) MP Ugljesa Mrdic.
The adopted laws include: the Law on Amendments to the Law on Seats and Jurisdictions of Courts and Public Prosecutor’s Offices; the Law on Amendments to the Law on the High Prosecutorial Council; the Law on Amendments and Supplements to the Law on the Organization and Jurisdiction of State Authorities for Combating High-Tech Crime; the Law on Amendments and Supplements to the Law on the Public Prosecutor’s Office; and the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Judges.
The Prime Minister of Serbia, Prof. Dr. Djuro Macut, stated that ministers and directors of public enterprises must be more operational and spend more time in the field, adding that the time has come to consider a reshuffle of the Government, possibly as early as spring.
The Serbian national water polo team won the European Championship title after defeating Hungary 10-7 (3-2, 2-3, 2-1, 3-1) in the final. Serbia’s Dusan Mandic was named the Most Valuable Player of the final.
A thematic session of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, at which key issues of strategic importance for Serbia will be discussed, will be held on Sunday, January 25th.
The amendments to the Law on the Public Prosecutor’s Office provide for the reinstatement of the mechanism allowing public prosecutors to be seconded from lower to higher public prosecutor’s offices. Provisions related to the filing of objections have also been revised, along with several other provisions of the current law.
Under the adopted amendments, the Supreme Public Prosecutor is stripped of discretionary authority to decide on such secondments; instead, future decisions will be made by the High Prosecutorial Council.
Mrdic previously stated that the adopted legal amendments would make the judiciary more efficient and that this represents the first step toward, as he put it, “returning the hijacked judiciary to the state and the people.”
