Christopher Hill to Newsmax Balkans: Serbia Is Clearly Moving Toward the West, and We Support Its EU Aspirations
Serbia is clearly moving toward the West, and I want to believe that the United States and Serbia understand each other well and are working together not just on bilateral issues but also with other countries, said U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill on the program Portal.
"I think Serbia has made a choice, and I think it’s clearly moving westward. I think it’s looking to do so at an accelerated pace. I think there are a number of reasons for that and there are many reasons for this," Hill stated.
The ambassador highlighted Serbia's support for Ukraine in its fight against aggression as a key development.
"That has been very clarifying in recent years. So, I think Serbia is on a good track, and we certainly share and support Serbia’s aspirations for membership in the European Union," Hill emphasized.
While Serbia has supported Ukraine on one hand, it continues to maintain strong relations with Russia and China, raising the question of whether this will hinder improving ties with the U.S.
"Serbia has a long history of these relationships, including with China. It’s not for Americans to tell Serbs who they can talk to, but I think what’s important is for Serbia to make clear what its policy objectives are, what its interests are," Hill explained.
Although the U.S. government is currently in a period of transition, Hill noted that shared interests remain unchanged regardless of the administration, steering U.S.-Serbia relations in a very positive direction.
When asked what advice he would give his successor, if such a practice existed, Hill responded:
"I would stress the fact that we have a very good relationship with Serbia and we do best with Serbia when we listen, at least 50% of the time, if not more. To understand Serbia’s perspective on issues is often complex, it’s often more complex than your first two days in Serbia would suggest. That is, once you arrive here you have to do a lot of careful listening. So, I would stress those kinds of issues."
