The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad has announced that, in connection with the collapse of the canopy at the Railway Station in the city, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people, twelve individuals have been arrested and detained.
The criminal acts for which the suspects are charged carry a prison sentence of two to 12 years.
"The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad informs the public that, after gathering and thoroughly analyzing all necessary documentation, conducting interviews with a large number of citizens, and following expert assessments to determine the cause and circumstances under which the canopy collapsed, which were submitted to the prosecution on November 20, 2024, and after reviewing the findings and opinions of construction experts, the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad ordered the arrest and detention of a total of 12 individuals on Thursday, November 21st ," the statement reads.
In the tragedy at the Railway Station in Novi Sad on November 1st, 15 people were killed when the canopy collapsed, and two individuals are receiving treatment at the University Clinical Center of Vojvodina.
Gert Jan Kopman, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, is on a working visit to Belgrade.
