Brnabic: I Expect Deans to Take Responsibility After Students' Demands Are Met

"I believe that the academic community is one of the most important segments of society, especially higher education. If the majority of them supported the students' demands, then they must also take responsibility," said the Speaker of the National Assembly. Brnabic emphasized that she expects the deans who supported the students' demands to use their authority and return to their work, which is to create new experts and people who will lead Serbia in the future.

"President Vucic sent a clear message last night that we will continue with our work starting Monday. We have fulfilled all the demands, and there were four of them, not four hundred and forty-four. It is easy to check how many demands there were and whether they were fulfilled. Anyone with a bit of common sense and honesty can see that all four demands were met. Further playing cat and mouse only shows that these are excuses to continue the protests, and that it is a political protest," said the Speaker of the National Assembly. She also added that it has nothing to do with a legitimate student struggle.

"If the protests continue, it is proof that it is about something else, not about a student struggle," said the Speaker of the Parliament.

"We will see if the protests were political or not"

The Speaker of the Assembly stated that Serbia will know how to preserve its institutions and the rule of law, and that even if these protests are political, the final goal is unclear.

"I don’t understand what the political goals are. The political goal can be a change of government, but only through democratic means. One way is through an advisory referendum, which President Vučić spoke about, that would be initiated by the National Assembly with 126 signatures from MPs, in which we would ask citizens if they want to start the procedure for recall. If the majority says yes, Aleksandar Vucic immediately resigns. Another solution is early parliamentary elections, but if we are talking about them as political representatives, it is concerning that they don’t want that. We will see on Monday whether the protests were political or not," Brnabic said.

"Justice will not be served in the streets in Serbia"

She also stated that Serbia will not be a country where justice is served in the streets.

"Serbia will know how to preserve its internal stability and further strengthen its institutions, as we inherited this from those before us, and we must leave them stronger for those who will come after us," Brnabic concluded.
