Speaking at a press conference in Brussels on Thursday evening, following the European Council meeting, von der Leyen pointed to numerous achievements under Hungary's presidency, which she emphasized had "expanded Europe outward."
"This week, you have achieved milestones on the accession path of Montenegro, Albania, and Serbia," von der Leyen stated. Montenegro closed three chapters in its EU negotiations this week, Albania opened another cluster, and the EU General Affairs Council approved a letter inviting Serbia to submit its negotiating positions for Chapters 16 and 19, which fall under Cluster 3 on competitiveness and inclusive growth.
Von der Leyen underscored that Hungary's presidency of the Council of the EU, which is nearing its conclusion, occurred during a transitional period between two political cycles – an inherently challenging time.
Among the numerous achievements of Hungary's presidency, she also noted the advancement of support for Ukraine through the adoption of the 15th sanctions package and the agreement on the G7 credit framework. She further highlighted the adoption of the ambitious Budapest Declaration.
