The White House statement criticized USAID for decades of irresponsibility toward taxpayers, allocating large sums to "insane and, in many cases, malicious projects by bureaucrats with almost no oversight."
In addition to the example related to Serbia, Leavitt also mentioned $70,000 for a DEI musical in Ireland, $47,000 for a transgender opera in Colombia, and $32,000 for a transgender comic book in Peru.
"As an American taxpayer, I don’t want my money going to this nonsense, and I know the American people don’t want that either," Leavitt said at a press conference.
The White House also cited examples of misuse, including $6 million for tourism in Egypt, $2.5 million for electric vehicles in Vietnam, and $2 million for gender transition and LGBT activism in Guatemala.
"Under President Donald Trump, this waste, fraud, and abuse end immediately," the White House statement asserts.

Elon Musk, head of the new Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the U.S. administration, called USAID a "criminal organization" and stated that it’s time for it to be dismantled.
The U.S. is the largest donor of foreign aid in the world, and in fiscal year 2023, it disbursed $72 billion in aid worldwide, including programs for women’s health in conflict zones, access to clean water, HIV/AIDS treatment, energy security, and efforts against corruption.
