Israel Stops Humanitarian Flotilla Near Gaza: Among Those Detained is a Serbian Activist; Vucic Responds

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a video showing an Israeli soldier handing personal belongings back to Swedish activist Greta Thunberg after she was detained.

It was emphasized that several ships in the flotilla were stopped and that the activists on board were being transferred to an Israeli port from where they would be deported.

"The ships were safely stopped, and the passengers are being transferred to an Israeli port. Greta and the other activists are safe and in good health", the statement said.

According to the Global Freedom Flotilla website, one of the intercepted ships includes Ognjen Markovic from Serbia.

"If you are watching this video, my ship has been intercepted, and I have been illegally detained by Israeli occupation forces. I urge you to pressure the Government of Serbia to demand my immediate and dignified release and to stop being complicit in genocide", Markovic said in a video published on the flotilla's website.

Vucic: The State Has a Duty to Help Its Citizens

Commenting on the situation and calls to the Serbian government to demand Marković’s release, President Aleksandar Vucic remarked that irresponsible individuals often call on the state for help - but that the state is always there to assist.

"I followed the news overnight, I saw what was happening - everything was expected. It seems no one in the world was surprised. Even Giorgia Meloni reacted earlier and said it should be stopped. Some people didn’t want to listen or refused at any cost. As for the fight for our people - that is our duty. We have often had to deal with irresponsible individuals. We have more than enough of these self-proclaimed saviors of the world. In the end, when they can’t save themselves, they call the state for help. The state, of course, is always there to help and will do everything it can", Vucic said.

Previously, the Israeli Navy had called on the Global Freedom Flotilla, which was attempting to break the Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, to change course, according to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
