Chinese Ambassador: I Do Not Expect U.S. Tariffs to Affect Our Cooperation with Serbia
The Chinese Ambassador to Belgrade, Li Ming, stated that he does not expect U.S. tariffs to affect the operations of the two major Chinese companies in Serbia – Zijin and HBIS – nor that the trade war the U.S. is waging against China will in any way impact the cooperation between China and Serbia.
"I believe that our cooperation, particularly regarding the steel plant in Smederevo and the mining company Zijin in Bor, will not be affected by the tariffs initiated by the United States. Their products are not primarily intended for the U.S. market. Therefore, I believe that these two key projects will not be impacted by the tariffs imposed by the U.S.," said Li Ming.
Li emphasized that the cooperation between China and Serbia is built on solid foundations, with joint projects based on mutual respect, equality, and shared benefit. He added that no external factor can negatively influence the cooperation between the two countries.
He expressed confidence that China and Serbia will continue to play a constructive role on this issue and help contribute to greater global security and stability.
American economist and professor at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs stated that Serbia, which is a respected interlocutor in the region and globally, has the potential to support all its neighbours.
The China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) has officially confirmed the People's Republic of China's participation in EXPO 2027 in Belgrade.
He pointed out that these Chinese investments bring thousands of jobs to Serbia and that cooperation on these projects can only grow stronger, with an increase in the number of such projects expected in the future.
According to him, the cooperation between China and Serbia is one of the best examples of how countries around the world should collaborate and raise high the "flag" of multilateralism, globalization, and free markets.
He noted that, according to Chinese data, foreign trade between Serbia and China increased by 31.8% in 2024, while Serbian exports to China rose by 38.8%.
When asked how China would respond to the White House's announcement that the country now faces tariffs of up to 245%, Li emphasized that China strongly opposes the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States, but is also not afraid of them.
