Novi Sad City Assembly Votes to Erect Monument to Victims of Roof Canopy Collapse
The City Assembly of Novi Sad adopted an initiative by Mayor Zarko Micin to erect a monument to the victims of the roof canopy collapse at the city’s train station. During the session, citizens gathered in front of the Assembly to protest the move, but the event passed without incident.
Out of 56 present councilors, 44 voted in favor of the initiative. Twelve did not vote, and there were no abstentions or votes against.
Mayor Zarko Micin said he considered it his duty and obligation to ensure that the victims are never forgotten and that by permanently marking the site of the tragedy, the community shows its intention to remember them.
EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos visited the Novi Sad Railway Station and laid flowers at the site where the station’s canopy collapsed on November 1st of last year, resulting in the deaths of 16 people.
Marek, a young boy from Backi Petrovac, is organizing a charitable cake sale for the fourth consecutive year ahead of Easter, with the help of his mother and grandmother. This year, the money raised will be donated to Teodora, who was injured in the collapse of the roof canopy in Novi Sad.
He stated that it will be a place of remembrance, but also a warning to do things differently in the future.
Opposition councilors demanded the initiative be withdrawn until, as stated by Boris Fejdi from the People’s Movement of Serbia, the investigation is completed and accountability is established.
