Around 16,000 Fires in Serbia Since the Beginning of the Year
Since the start of the year, around 16,000 wildfires have broken out across Serbia. After each fire, the cause is determined; however, information on who is held responsible rarely reaches the public.
The Government of the Republic of Serbia announced that it has formed a Commission for Damage Recovery following the fires that affected several areas of Serbia during July this year and has allocated 350 million dinars to assist those impacted.
Wildfires are raging across multiple locations in Montenegro. Firefighters battled the blazes throughout the night – in Podgorica, Niksic, Bijelo Polje, Canj, and Buljarica.
Inspector at the Fire and Rescue Unit Administration (SVS) Saša Jersic explained to Newsmax Balkans that Fire and Rescue Units do not deal with determining the causes of fires.
“From experience, we can say that it is mostly the human element – carelessness, negligence, recklessness, or even intent. Those who may commit such acts usually do so when they are alone,” he emphasized.
The law clearly defines penalties for causing or setting fires – up to three years in prison for fires caused by negligence, and up to eight years for those who set them intentionally. In practice, things look somewhat different. If the person has no prior convictions and the fire was not caused through gross negligence, they may get away with only a suspended sentence.
In Serbia, there is no official registry of arsonists – at least not one available to the public.
