Vladimir Paunovic from the Center for Missing and Abused Children says that the introduction of the registry is important because it makes it easier to find people.
He referred to the number of reports and noted that those 3,000 reports per year refer to the number of missing persons, not people.
"This means that a certain number of both minors and adults disappear more than once, that is, their disappearance is reported more than once," explained Paunovic for Radio Television of Serbia.
He pointed out that the increase in the number of missing persons is related to the structure of the population and certain problems it encounters.
"First of all, we are talking about the elderly population, we have a high frequency of people with dementia and we also have a number of people with mental and psychiatric illnesses," says Paunović.
As he says, when it comes to minors and adults, the largest number will eventually be found.
"They are at a much greater risk of phenomena that are found in society. They can become, first of all, victims of human trafficking, drawn into the chain of prostitution, drug addiction," he explains.
He stated that the most vulnerable victims are young people who are in the social protection system.
"We are talking about children who are in foster families, homes, children who are victims of domestic violence. It is this group of young people aged 13 to 18 who are at the greatest risk," he emphasized.
As he says, the team of the Center for Missing and Abused Children is working to speed up and improve the tracking system.
"Serbia is one of the few countries in Europe that does not have its own public register of persons. The public register of persons is important primarily for the reason of educating the population and increasing awareness of missing persons," noted Paunovic.
He pointed out that the register of missing persons should be made public so that the general population could join the search.
