At a press conference following their meeting, the head of the EU Delegation emphasized that the pace of reforms in Serbia has slowed, though progress is visible in the economy and in the harmonization of policies with the EU.
Von Beckerath particularly commended the progress made in appointing members of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) and in drafting the law on the unified electoral roll, urging that these processes be carried out transparently and inclusively.
At the same time, he stressed that Serbia must accelerate reforms in the areas of the judiciary, rule of law, human rights, freedom of expression, and academic freedom. He specifically pointed to the need to reform the electoral framework and to reduce divisive rhetoric that undermines trust in institutions.
Von Beckerath reminded that progress in normalizing relations with Kosovo continues to determine the pace of EU accession.
According to him, the report is not a critical document, but a mirror showing where progress has been made and which areas require further effort.
Vucic then emphasized that Serbia’s European path is a strategic one and that this will be confirmed through actions by the end of his term.
"By that time, I will openly tell everyone that our strategic path is the European path", Vucic stated.
The President acknowledged that Serbia still has room for improvement in geopolitics and reforms but reiterated that the European path remains the country’s strategic goal.
"I believe that from the last position we hold now, we will move forward one day. We will work hard, we will work diligently", Vucic said.
He particularly praised the EU’s support in infrastructure and energy projects and investments, including cooperation with the Energy Task Force.
"We greatly appreciate the exceptional support we have received from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as well as the vast number of investments from the EU. I am convinced that there is still much more we can achieve together", he concluded.
