Serbian Ambassador to Switzerland: Serbian Citizen Killed in Fire in Crans-Montana
Serbian citizen Stefan Ivanovic (31), who had been listed as missing following a fire at a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, has been found dead, his family confirmed.
This information was also confirmed to Tanjug by the Serbian Ambassador to Switzerland, Ivan Trifunovic.
"We learned this from his family, but we still do not have official confirmation from the Swiss police. His family received this information through DNA analysis, and it is unfortunately certain that he has passed away",Trifunovic said.
He added that the Swiss newspaper Blick reported eyewitness accounts stating that Ivanovic was repeatedly entering and exiting the club in an attempt to rescue other people.
"It appears that he managed to save several individuals. However, unfortunately, in his final attempt he was unable to get out and he died", Trifunovic said.
He also noted that it was initially believed that the young man, who had been reported missing, was among the four injured Serbian citizens, but this later proved not to be the case.
Injured Serbian Citizens Not in Life-Threatening Condition
Trifunovic stated that the Swiss police have now officially confirmed the identities of the four injured Serbian citizens. Two of them have been transferred to Germany for further medical treatment, and the Serbian Embassy is actively assisting one family with logistical support.
"We now have four injured individuals, and unfortunately, Stefan Ivanovic has lost his life", Trifunovic said.
Regarding the injured Serbian nationals, he emphasized that none of them are in life-threatening condition.
"They have sustained burns of varying degrees - some more severe, some less severe - but we have been informed that all of them are out of danger", the ambassador said.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated at the annual press conference that Serbia has two goals for 2026: the first, political, is peace and stability; the second is to make 2026 the best year in Serbia’s history, primarily in terms of the economy.
Representatives of the Hungarian company MOL will visit Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) next week to begin a due diligence review of the company’s operations. During the visit, they are expected to tour all key NIS facilities.
He added that there are currently no indications that additional Serbian citizens were injured or killed in the fire.
"It is not certain, but it appears that several individuals have not yet been identified in terms of nationality and identity. However, we still do not have official figures, and the numbers remain as stated at the press conference - 40 fatalities and, according to some reports, 119 or 121 injured", Trifunovic said.
Earlier, Stefan Ivanovic’s family had submitted a DNA sample to confirm his identity. He had been reported missing following the fire at a bar in Crans-Montana, where he was employed as a security guard.
Two of the injured individuals have been transferred to Germany, while the embassy has provided logistical assistance to one family, RTS confirmed.
All those affected by the tragedy in Crans-Montana may contact the Serbian Embassy for information and contact details of local Swiss authorities.
