Speaking at a ceremonial reception organized by the Embassy of Serbia in Greece on the occasion of Serbia’s Statehood Day, he emphasized that relations between Serbia and Greece are deeply rooted in shared history, faith, and common values. He added that these ties form the foundation of strong political dialogue and cooperation in the fields of security, economy, education, and sport, according to a statement issued by the Government of Serbia.

In his address, Serbia’s Ambassador to Greece, Nikola Nedeljkovic, expressed gratitude to the Greek people, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the country’s political leadership for their continued support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty regarding Kosovo and Metohija, as well as for their strong backing of Serbia’s European path.

He added that in a time of global challenges, the friendship and fraternal relations between Serbia and Greece stand as an example of stability, mutual respect, and solidarity.

As stated, the cultural and artistic segment of the program featured a performance by the Police Orchestra of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior together with Ljubica Vranes. Guests had the opportunity to listen to traditional Serbian music and sample Serbian cuisine and wines.

The reception was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic, Minister of Sport Zoran Gajic, and Secretary-General of the Government Petar Janjic, as well as senior Greek officials - Speaker of Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis, Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias, Minister of the Interior Theodoros Livanios, Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Giannis Kefalogiannis, and Minister of Sport Giannis Vroutsis.

Among the guests were 53 ambassadors, including the ambassadors of Latvia, Georgia, Jordan, South Africa, Thailand, and Chile, who cover Serbia on a non-resident basis from Athens, as well as the Ambassador of the United States of America, Kimberly Guilfoyle. Numerous representatives of the business community, diplomatic corps, sports sector, and the Church were also in attendance.

Office for Kosovo and Metohija: The Unilateral Declaration of Kosovo’s Independence a Major Defeat for International Law

The unilateral declaration of Kosovo’s independence 18 years ago represents a major defeat for international law and for all those who had hoped for the establishment of an orderly, peaceful society in Kosovo and Metohija, the Government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija stated.

It was emphasized that, by fighting for its sovereignty and territorial integrity and against separatism, Serbia is safeguarding not only its state and national interests, but also the very foundations of the international legal order based on the values of the United Nations.

According to the statement, Albanian separatist political structures in Kosovo and Metohija are today marking the anniversary of what they perceive as a victory of their ideology; however, it is nothing more than a major defeat from the standpoint of international law, as well as a setback for all those who had hoped for the establishment of a normal and orderly peacetime society in Kosovo and Metohija.

As noted, by defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity and opposing separatism in Kosovo and Metohija, Serbia is protecting not only its vital state and national interests, but also the very foundations of the international legal order based on the Charter and values of the United Nations.

"Serbia’s position is recognized by a large part of humanity, as there is an understanding that the flagrant violation of international law committed through the unilateral declaration of independence of the so-called ‘Kosovo’ constitutes not only an attack on international law, but also the beginning of a contagion threatening the interests of many states that have separatist movements within their own territories", the statement said.

The decision adopted in Pristina 18 years ago, it added, is also problematic from a moral standpoint, as it led to the creation of an anti-democratic political system based on the systematic disenfranchisement and terror against the Serbian people and their expulsion from their centuries-old homes.

"Over the past 18 years, Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, as victims of the separatist ambitions of extremist Albanian political structures, have faced the full destructiveness of chauvinistic hatred and have been exposed to every form of violence", the statement emphasized.

The statement further noted that the human rights of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija are so severely endangered that it can be said without hesitation that they are the most vulnerable people in contemporary Europe.

"Our political and diplomatic struggle for the southern Serbian province of Kosovo and Metohija is therefore not only an obligation under international law, but also a moral imperative and the most important national issue, and we will be guided by these principles and care for our people for as long as Serbia is led by President Aleksandar Vucic", the Government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija stated.

The Assembly in Pristina, at a session chaired by then parliamentary speaker Jakup Krasniqi, unilaterally declared Kosovo’s independence on 17 February 2008, with 109 Albanian deputies voting in favor of the declaration.
