(FOTO) Citizens and students protested in front of the Rectorate: Gathering marked by incidents and rector’s address
Citizens, students, and members of the academic community gathered on Tuesday in front of the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade, where they blocked the street in front of the building while members of the Criminal Police Directorate conducted a search that lasted nine hours.
The protest was marked by several incidents, both in front of the Rectorate and near Republic Square.
The protest in front of the Rectorate in Belgrade, triggered by the entry of criminal police officers into the building and marked by incidents, ended after an address by Rector Vladan Djokic.
The rector of the University of Belgrade exited the building around 10:20 PM, following the morning entry of police, who had come to the university headquarters on the order of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office as part of an investigation into the death of a student from the Faculty of Philosophy.
Expo 2027 is our greatest opportunity for growth, and at this exhibition we will present Serbia in the right way, said Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Sinisa Mali, in an interview for the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.
According to a Newsmax Balkans reporter, the rector stated that police had so far seized computers and other equipment, and that members of the Criminal Police were still inside the building.
He emphasized that he wants to cooperate with authorities, but that the situation represents intimidation and pressure on students and professors who do not want to remain silent.
Rector Vladan Djokic said that members of the Criminal Police entered the Rectorate without prior notice and seized receivers and computers during the search, but that the seized receivers do not contain relevant information about the student’s death.
As reported, the rector addressed the gathered crowd from the balcony of the Rectorate.
A cordon of police and gendarmerie in riot gear regrouped from the area in front of the Rectorate and the Faculty of Philosophy and was deployed near the National Theatre and Republic Square. Around 7:20 PM, during scuffles with protesters, police briefly used batons.
To recall, members of the Criminal Police Directorate, acting on orders from the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, entered the Rectorate building to check for possible unsecured access points to the Faculty of Philosophy and potential irregularities in the Rectorate’s operations.
As part of a comprehensive investigation into the death of the 25-year-old student and possible irregularities in the Rectorate’s work, members of Serbia’s Criminal Police entered the premises of the University of Belgrade Rectorate
