U.S. President Donald Trump is arriving on an official visit to China, already being assessed as one of the most important events of the year.

In his opening remarks, Xi said he had always believed that the shared interests of China and the United States outweigh their differences, adding that the success of one country represents an opportunity for the other.

"Stable relations between China and the United States are a blessing for the world. Cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation causes harm. We should be partners, not rivals", the Chinese president said.

He added that global stability is linked to the stability of relations between Washington and Beijing, noting that the world is at "a new crossroads", marked by turbulence and uncertainty.

During his speech, Xi also mentioned the concept of the "Thucydides Trap", a theory in international relations describing the danger of war when a rising power begins to challenge an established global power, most used to describe the potential conflict between the U.S. and China.

By mentioning it, he warned about the danger of conflict between a rising power and an already established one.

He said the international community is wondering whether China and the United States can avoid such a scenario and develop a new model of relations between major powers.

The American president said relations between the two countries would be "better than ever".

"We will have a fantastic future together. It is an honor to be with you. It is an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the United States will be better than ever before", Trump said.

He emphasized that he has “known the Chinese leader for a long tim and called Xi "a great leader".

"I tell everyone that you are a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like when I say that, but I say it anyway because it’s true", Trump said, addressing the Chinese president.

Xi also pointed out that 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of American independence, emphasizing the importance of long-term stability in relations between the two countries.

After the bilateral talks, a visit to the Temple of Heaven and a state banquet in honor of the American president were planned.

This is Trump’s first visit to China since 2017.
