Seven Years Since the Murder of Oliver Ivanovic, Memorial Service Held at the Church of Saint Sava
A memorial service was held at the Church of Saint Sava in Belgrade to mark the seventh anniversary of the murder of Oliver Ivanovic, leader of the Civic Initiative "Serbia, Democracy, Justice."
In addition to members of Ivanovic’s family, the service was attended by Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, National Assembly President Ana Brnabic, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Djuric.
Following the service, Ivanovic's widow Milena, his son Bogdan, Vucevic, Brnabic, and Djuric lit candles to honor his memory and commemorate the anniversary of his assassination in Kosovska Mitrovica.
Oliver Ivanovic was murdered on January 16, 2018, in front of his party's offices in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica. He was shot in the back six times.
Investigations into the murder have been conducted both in Belgrade and Pristina. However, Belgrade has repeatedly stated that Pristina has failed to respond to inquiries from Serbian authorities regarding the investigation and evidence.
In June of last year, the Basic Court of the Provisional Institutions in Pristina sentenced Marko Rosic to 10 years in prison, Nedeljko Spasojevic to four and a half years, and Dragisa Markovic and Žarko Jovanovic to four years each for involvement in Ivanovic’s murder. However, the perpetrators and masterminds of the assassination remain unknown.
The indictment in this case was amended three times over three years.
Representatives of the Serbian List submitted an appeal to the Election Appeals and Complaints Panel in Pristina regarding the decision of the Central Election Commission (CEC) on the composition of election committees.
The first indictment was filed in early December 2019. By the end of that month, the prosecutor submitted a revised indictment, and a third indictment was issued in November 2020.
In January 2014, Oliver Ivanovic and four other Serbs were charged with war crimes against civilians in 1999 and 2000.
During much of the trial, Ivanovic was in prison, initially in Pristina, and later in Kosovska Mitrovica after a hunger strike.
He was sentenced to nine years in prison in January 2016, but the verdict was overturned in February 2017, leading to a retrial in August of that year.
