Message from the European Commissioner for Enlargement on the Need for Dialogue Among All Parties in Serbia

She highlighted on the social network X that she is closely monitoring the situation in Serbia and that her message is that the European agenda offers solutions for many issues at the heart of the discussions.

"It is important to create conditions for an inclusive dialogue involving all interested parties, political actors, institutions, and members of civil society, who will address the reforms necessary for Serbia's European future," stated Marta Kos in her published letter.

She emphasized that this will strengthen Serbian society and consolidate Serbia's path toward EU membership.

The European Commissioner mentioned in her letter, which she sent in response to letters received from members of the Serbian Academy, political representatives, and civil society organizations regarding the current situation in Serbia, that she is closely following the protests in Serbia. She expressed her desire to address the concerns raised and reminded everyone of what the EU stands for.

"The freedom of assembly is a fundamental right. It must be exercised peacefully and in accordance with the law. We have witnessed incidents against protesters. We expect a full, impartial, and swift investigation. Violence cannot be tolerated. We expect Serbian police to continue ensuring the safety of protesters. A language that incites violence and a lack of mutual respect cannot be the solution," stated Kos.

She added that it is the priority of the EU and President Ursula von der Leyen to support Serbia's progress on its European path and its goal of becoming a part of the European Union. She also pointed out that the path to EU membership includes reforms that integrate our common values into legislation and practice.

"Serbia's path to the European Union offers solutions for many issues that are at the heart of the discussion today. Reforms that are part of the EU accession process will strengthen the fight against corruption, ensure the independence of the judiciary and accountability of institutions, promote media freedom and media pluralism, and improve electoral conditions. If properly implemented, these reforms will have a transformative effect that will benefit all citizens and bring Serbia closer to the EU," said the European Commissioner.

Kos also emphasized that the EU accession process requires an intense effort from the whole society and that it should be a national project owned by all—the government, parliament, opposition, civil society, every region, city, and village, and, as she said, every citizen of the country.
