President of the European Parliament: EU Enlargement is a Geopolitical Necessity

"Enlargement is no longer just a noble ambition, it is now, I firmly believe, a geopolitical necessity," Metsola said at the annual conference of EU ambassadors in Brussels, asserting that "Russian interference in Moldova, Georgia, and the Western Balkans is a direct challenge" to the collective security of the EU.

At the same time, she emphasized that in the past decade, the EU has lost more members than it has gained.

"Think about that for a moment, and then you will understand why. If we continue to delay enlargement, and we have had one summit after another where we discussed what conclusions we would reach, sometimes with 27 different interpretations of these conclusions, sometimes with 27 plus three different interpretations of those conclusions, if we keep doing that, then others will step in to fill the gap," Metsola said while speaking about the EU's neighborhood and her vision of Europe.

From February 3 to 7, the annual EU ambassadors' conference titled "EU Foreign Policy Delivering" is being held in Brussels, hosted by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
