Mother of Kidnapped Alon Ohel: He is in chains and being starved, but I know he will continue to fight
Idit Ohel, the mother of Alon, a young man of Serbian descent who was kidnapped by Hamas, said in an interview with Newsmax Balkans that her son is a strong person who will continue to fight for his life, but that it is crucial for him to return home as soon as possible to receive medical care.
Israeli-Serbian citizen Alon Ohel has been in captivity in Gaza for 494 days and is spending his 24th birthday in detention. Every day, his family appeals for his release, and yesterday, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric called on the international community and anyone who can help to bring him home.
Idit Ohel, from Tel Aviv, shared what she knows about Alon's situation based on statements from released hostages who were with him.
"I don’t know where he is, but I know he has been in the tunnels since November 2023. Alon hasn’t seen fresh air or sunlight since then. He doesn’t know whether it is day or night. He has been given only a piece of bread each day, he is being starved. He is in chains, his legs are bound so he cannot move, and this has been the case for almost 500 days," said Idit Ohel.
The family of Serbian citizen Alon Ohel, who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023, has learned that he is alive, Israeli activist Aviva Klompas reported.
Honorary Consul of Serbia in Israel, Aleksandar Nikolic, told Newsmax Balkans that the abducted Alon Ohel (23), a young pianist of Serbian descent from Novi Sad, is expected to be part of the exchange in the second phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Israel’s Ambassador to Serbia, Avivit Bar-Ilan, said in an interview with Newsmax Balkans that the war in Gaza will not end until Hamas returns the 101 Israeli hostages, kidnapped in southern Israel in October of last year.
She adds that her son is a strong person but needs to return home as soon as possible to receive medical care.
"His eye is injured, when he was captured, bombs were falling in his direction, there was a lot of gunfire, so he needs medical care and food. He is currently very weak physically, but his emotional and mental state is very strong. He is a strong young man," she added.
Our interviewee emphasizes that Alon's release is planned for the second phase, which is expected to start on March 1, but negotiations are still ongoing.
"I don’t have a date for when he will return home, which is very difficult. I know that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is doing certain things to try to secure his release, and Foreign Minister Marko Djuric is doing everything he can. But we need everyone; we need the world to know this is happening and that it is inhumane. He is an innocent civilian who was brutally kidnapped by Hamas, and all hostages need to return home as soon as possible," stressed Idit Ohel.
She reminds that Alon's grandfather is from Novi Sad, who went through many wars and built a family in Israel.
"I know that Alon will continue to fight for his life, just like his grandfather," concluded Idit Ohel.
