Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime Takes Over Investigation into the Canopy Collapse in Novi Sad
Case files related to potential criminal offenses concerning the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad Railway Station will be submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime, Branko Stamenkovic, Public Prosecutor, confirmed to Newsmax Balkans.
"The Prosecutor General Zagorka Dolovac has decided that the case files regarding the possible commission of multiple criminal offenses with corrupt elements – during the initiation, planning, design, execution of works, and commissioning of the Novi Sad Railway Station – will be forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (JTOK)," the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office stated in an official announcement.
It was further specified that the acting public prosecutor from the Special Department for Corruption Suppression at the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad will be temporarily assigned to work on this case within the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime.
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade announced that, in the case initiated following a criminal complaint by the Dean of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts (FDU), five individuals have been identified as suspects in the attack on students outside the faculty on November 22, 2024.
The Higher Court in Belgrade has sentenced the former State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), Dijana Hrkalovic, to 16 months in prison for abusing her position in the Ministry to obstruct investigations and the prosecution of criminals.
As clarified, the decision was made because the established facts indicate a well-founded suspicion that crimes falling under the jurisdiction of state authorities responsible for organized crime and terrorism have been committed.
It was emphasized that the process of determining responsibility for the loss of 15 lives during the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad Railway Station, which is being conducted by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, will continue independently and with the highest priority. Additionally, it was stated that the indictment against 13 individuals is expected to come into effect soon.
"Public Prosecutor General Zagorka Dolovac also takes this opportunity to invite representatives of the student protests to a meeting to discuss the fulfillment of their demands that fall under the jurisdiction of the public prosecutor's office," the statement, as reported by news agencies, concluded.
The indictment for the canopy collapse includes 13 individuals, among them the former Minister of Construction Goran Vesic.
