First Meeting of Serbian MPs and European Parliament: EU Membership a Strategic Priority
The first day of the meeting of the EU-Serbia Parliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee (POSP) was held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Serbian MPs emphasized that EU membership is a strategic priority for Serbia and that its goal is to align its legislation with that of the EU by the end of 2026.
During the meeting, discussions focused on the accession negotiations and Serbia's relations with the EU, the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, the rule of law, democracy, and freedom of expression, as well as the situation in Serbia following the tragedy in Novi Sad, which triggered blockades and protests.
European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that the European Union calls for the creation of conditions in Serbia for an inclusive dialogue involving all parties, and emphasized that this is a shared responsibility for all of them.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated that EU enlargement is a geopolitical necessity and warned that if the EU continues to delay the process, "others will step in to fill the gap."
The meeting of the EU-Serbia Parliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee (POSP), consisting of Serbian MPs and European Parliament (EP) members, was co-chaired by Milimir Vujadinovic, the chair of the Serbian National Assembly delegation, and Lukas Furlas, the chair of the EP delegation for relations with Serbia.
Furlas stated that he is confident that the right place for Serbia is within the European family and that he believes there is a shared will to keep Serbia on the path of EU accession. Vujadinović emphasized that Serbia's EU membership is its most important foreign policy priority and that, in this regard, there are no significant differences among political parties.
Serbia's Minister for European Integration, Tanja Miscevic, spoke about the progress made on opening Cluster 3, the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, the reform agenda, as well as Serbia's plan for 2026. She stated that working on the reform agenda has shown that Serbia can align its domestic law with EU law by the end of 2026.
