Vucic and Costa after the meeting: The future of Serbia is in the European Union

The President of Serbia stated after the meeting with Costa that they discussed all important issues, the necessity of dialogue with Pristina, and the preservation of regional peace and stability. He emphasized that Costa brought goodwill to the talks about Serbia’s accession to the European Union.

"Serbia sometimes has a disobedient president, but he has never questioned Serbia’s European path. I accept criticism, both from Costa and from Ursula von der Leyen. Serbia in the EU is our path and our goal, and I believe that the people who will be the new president and the new government in two years will continue on this path," Vucic said.

Costa stated that the European Union remains strongly committed to Serbia's accession as a stable and prosperous country and expects that the commitment of the new Serbian government to European integration will quickly turn into concrete actions and accelerated reforms.

"We currently have positive momentum in the EU for enlargement, and that is a clear opportunity for Serbia to latch onto and take advantage of. The European Union remains strongly committed to Serbia’s accession as a stable and prosperous country that, despite the legacy of the past, has chosen a European future. And I was glad to hear that European integration remains a top priority for you and for the new government," Costa said.

Responding to a question from a Newsmax Balkans reporter about when Serbia will become part of the EU, he said there is no set date, but emphasized that what matters now is turning words into concrete actions and accelerating reforms.

Parliamentary Opposition Representatives Meet with Costa

Representatives of the opposition in the Serbian Parliament presented to the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, that the European Union should openly and clearly support the citizens’ fight for the rule of law, media freedom, electoral reform, and the fight against corruption.

Radomir Lazovic, leader of the Green-Left Front, stated at a press conference in the parliament that he had informed Costa about the socio-political crisis in which Serbia currently finds itself and expressed expectations regarding the EU.

"As a pro-European party, we believe that the EU’s role should be an open and clear support for the citizens of Serbia in their struggle for the rule of law, independent institutions, media freedom, free elections, and the fight against corruption – which is costing lives in Serbia," said Lazovic, adding that Costa is aware of the situation in the country.

According to Lazovic, opposition representatives asked Costa to take more concrete and consistent positions, such as the one expressed by Marta Kos – that Europe should demand from Serbia the same things as the students.

Lazovic also said that Costa was informed during the meeting with the opposition about the repression being carried out against critics of the regime.
