Potocari Marks 30 Years Since the Srebrenica Massacre: "So That It Never Happens to Anyone Again"
The 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre is being commemorated at the Potocari Memorial Center. More than 6,700 victims have been buried at the center, and at least 1,200 people are still missing.
In silence and sorrow, with the presence of families, seven more victims — whose remains have been identified and found, though not completely — will be buried. A commemoration was held for all the victims, attended by many citizens, delegations, and high-ranking officials.
Leaving a Better Future for Younger Generations
Families of the victims told Newsmax Balkans that every anniversary is sad and painful for them, but they also stressed that younger generations must know what happened in 1995. They said it's the duty of those who survived the atrocity to leave behind a better future and life for the young.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic stated that he is proud to have personally attended the commemoration of the Srebrenica massacre ten years ago, emphasizing that he showed respect for the victims despite all the pressure and attacks he faced at the time.
The Basic Court in Pristina has issued arrest warrants for 20 Serbs for alleged war crimes. They are suspected of killing 106 Albanian civilians and mistreating another 300 in Djakovica. The Ministry of Justice of Serbia has strongly condemned this decision.
The Prosecution in Pristina has filed an indictment before the Basic Court against five Serbs, on suspicion that they allegedly committed war crimes against the civilian population in the Gnjilan region during the conflict in Kosovo and Metohija.
"Such things must not be forgotten — people need to talk about them, children need to know what happened, so that it never happens to anyone again, like it happened to us. We want to send a message so that everyone knows, and God forbid it happens to anyone," said Beguna Sinanovic, who lost three brothers in Srebrenica.
Returnees Prove Coexistence Is Possible
Newsmax Balkans reporters spoke with locals who returned to live in Srebrenica after 1995. They said they always considered this place their home and that they are proof coexistence among people can be sustainable and functional.
"We who returned must be very wise. We have to overcome the negative messages, because those aren’t messages from the entire Serbian people. We should stay here, live on our land. I came back to live here because I work with young people in Srebrenica, and I see that children especially want to live here in peace, without any problems, and without the burden of the war-torn past," said Begija Smajic, a councilor in the Srebrenica Municipal Assembly.
