Djuric with Guterres: The Arrest of Popovic Is an Attempt to Intimidate Serbs and Undermine Dialogue

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Djuric spoke with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which he expressed Serbia’s deep concern over the arrest of Igor Popovic, a member of the Serbian negotiation team, as well as over the harassment and detention of other Serbs.

The head of Serbian diplomacy emphasized that such actions represent “a dangerous attempt to intimidate the Serbian community and undermine the dialogue.”

In a phone conversation, he stressed that Serbia expects a clear and principled engagement from international actors, especially from the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), whose presence remains crucial for protecting the rights and security of the Serbian people on the ground, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

Djuric also noted that Serbia will continue to be a reliable supporter of the work of the United Nations and a part of the solution in preserving peace and stability, in accordance with the UN Charter, which remains a cornerstone of international law and a guarantor of equality among nations.

On this occasion, Minister Djuric stated that respecting this framework is the only path to preserving stability in the region and in the world.

To recall, in Kosovo and Metohija, the Assistant Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Igor Popovic, responsible for legal affairs, was detained.

Popovic was attending a commemoration in Orahovac marking the anniversary of the killing of Serbs from the Orahovac area at the hands of the terrorist KLA, the Office for Kosovo and Metohija previously announced.
