Minister Dacic: 114 People Detained Over Attacks on Police, Including Three Foreign Nationals
Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dacic stated that 114 people were detained due to attacks on the police during Thursday's protests in several cities across Serbia. He added that 34 criminal charges and 28 misdemeanor charges have been filed. Among those arrested are three foreign nationals.
He also said that 75 members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were injured during the protests and emphasized that this was a brutal attack on the police and the state of Serbia.
Students in blockade and citizens’ assemblies organized demonstrations on Wednesday evening in more than 20 cities across Serbia. Incidents occurred in Belgrade and Novi Sad.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, commenting on the protests in several locations across the country and the incidents in Novi Sad, said that “only thanks to the wisdom and patience of a vast number of citizens, peace was somehow preserved.”
He noted that police forces were deployed everywhere to maintain public order and peace, and that over 2,000 officers were engaged on Thursday, many of whom have been subjected to brutal attacks for months.
According to the minister, the three foreign nationals arrested for attacking police during the protests are citizens of Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy.
