U.S. Department of the Treasury Again Postpones Sanctions on the Petroleum Industry of Serbia
The United States Department of the Treasury has, for the sixth time, postponed the implementation of sanctions on the Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS), this time until September 26, the Ministry of Mining and Energy announced.
Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic stated in the announcement that NIS will continue, even under difficult circumstances, to ensure a stable supply of oil and oil derivatives to the domestic market.
According to her, the ultimate goal is the removal of NIS from the sanctions list of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, a process that does not depend on Serbia.
“We hope that the continuation of high-level talks between the United States and Russia will contribute to progress regarding the entire package of U.S. sanctions on Russian companies, as well as to an agreement that could positively influence the resolution of uncertainty concerning the Petroleum Industry of Serbia and the company’s removal from the sanctions list,” the minister said.
The Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) has submitted a request to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury for a new postponement of sanctions.
The Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) will continue to be a dominant company in the energy sector in our country, stated the Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, in the program Stav nedelje.
She pointed out that by postponing sanctions so far, Serbia has managed to preserve its energy security.
“Despite the complex circumstances over which we have no influence, we have ensured that the refinery has sufficient crude oil and continues to operate, and we are grateful to the U.S. administration for its understanding thus far. The situation remains complicated, and the country continues to make maximum efforts and to maintain an active dialogue with both the American and Russian sides,” Djedovic Handanovic emphasized.
She also recalled that Serbia in no way contributed to the imposition of sanctions on NIS, stressing that they are the result of global politics.
“We will continue to fight with all diplomatic means to ensure stable supplies for our citizens and the economy,” the minister concluded.
At the end of July, the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued a new special license that delayed the full implementation of sanctions against NIS, allowing the company to continue its operational activities without interruption until August 27.
NIS was placed on the sanctions list due to its majority Russian ownership.
