In Serbia and the Republic of Srpska, the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom, and the National Flag is observed in memory of September 15, 1918, when the Serbian army broke through the Salonika Front. This breakthrough led to the collapse of the Central Powers' alliance and the end of World War I.

Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and the National Flag

As a sign of special respect for the heroic ancestors who defeated the enemies in 1918 and secured a magnificent victory for the Serbs in World War I, the Government of Serbia decided on September 11, 2020, that from then on, the day of the Salonika (Thessaloniki) Front breakthrough—September 15—would be marked as the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom, and the National Flag. The Government of the Republic of Srpska made the same decision.

The collapse of the Central Powers’ fronts, triggered by the Serbian breakthrough on the Salonika Front, led to the end of World War I—the most devastating war the world had seen at that time—resulting in the capitulation of Bulgaria and Turkey first, followed by Austria-Hungary and Germany.

The victory in World War I, the breakthrough of the Salonika Front, the end of the global war, and the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, are considered one of the greatest achievements in the entire history of the Serbian people.

This year, the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom, and the National Flag, i.e., the anniversary of the heroic breakthrough of the Salonika Front, is also being marked by a large military parade called "Strength of Unity" on September 20 in Belgrade.
