The largest Serbian telecommunications company is rapidly developing 5G, expanding in the region and the United States, and building projects that, as Lucic notes, confirm that persistent work and a clear strategy yield results.
In Serbia, the 5G network has officially begun operating. It is currently available to users in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis, and Kragujevac, while nationwide coverage is expected over the course of next year.
We spoke with Telekom Srbija CEO Vladimir Lucic about this technological leap, the company’s financial performance, preparations for EXPO 2027, the expansion of Newsmax Balkans, and its ambitions in the U.S. market.
He says that Serbia has, practically overnight, found itself in a new phase of mobile communications.
“A few days ago, 1.5 million of our users already had 5G functionality – that is, they could see the 5G icon on their devices. In the first phase, users will primarily notice significantly faster mobile internet, often faster than home Wi-Fi. By the end of the year, Telekom activated 1,050 base stations, ensuring high-quality coverage in the four largest cities,” Lucic says.
He adds that a plan for next year is already in place – one he describes as ambitious.
“I wouldn’t reveal the exact number now because of competition, but we will cover all cities and all major road routes, with a high-quality 5G network,” the interviewee tells Viewpoint of the Day.
Lucic also notes that the 5G service is free for all users, regardless of their tariff plan.
“Those who have a compatible phone but do not see the 5G signal should contact the customer service center, because for some older models the software update has not yet been completed,” the CEO says.
