IMEC is a new trade corridor linking India, the Gulf, Israel, and Europe, positioning the Balkans and Serbia as a natural extension toward Central and Eastern Europe.

The founder of the IMEC initiative and Director of Strategic Partnerships, Yonatan Koyfman, told Newsmax Balkans that IMEC is important because global trends have changed, and that it is not only about the transportation of goods, but also about numerous political connections.

"From the perspective of the United States, IMEC represents an effort to diversify transport routes for goods from India to Europe and to work with partners to improve these systems. This is also a period in which India has become increasingly important to the world and to global manufacturing. At the same time, Europe is concerned about the level of dependence on China. Israel plays one of the key roles here, as it is located precisely at the junction between land and maritime routes along this corridor", our interlocutor explained.

The Role of the Western Balkans

Koyfman elaborated that IMEC cannot function only over land or only over sea, as connecting it to the Western Balkans requires the use of both land and maritime routes.

"The Western Balkans, and Serbia in particular, are located at the crossroads between the Southeast and the West, and that position determines where companies invest and how goods move and transit. This corridor requires partners we can rely on. That is why the Western Balkans are not just an extension, but one of the key locations for the corridor’s functioning", Yonatan Koyfman said.

The founder of the IMEC initiative emphasized that the benefits of the corridor are already evident.

"Thanks to this space, we can achieve direct access to Western markets, which can lead to investments. Moreover, compared to larger economies, the Western Balkans are able to absorb new investments, which means this region is of great strategic importance", our interlocutor noted.

He added that the region is important because it can be easily integrated on both sides of the supply chain.

"That is why this position is highly attractive to investors, and why they are increasingly investing here", Koyfman concluded.
