Who Are the "Winners" and Who the "Losers" of Local Elections in Ten Cities and Municipalities

Local elections in ten municipalities have confirmed the dominance of the list led by President Aleksandar Vucic, while the opposition is still searching for a clear alternative, analyst Zoran Vuletic told Newsmax Balkans.

Vuletic assesses that the dialogue announced by Aleksandar Vucic is a test for opposition parties and emphasizes that shaping a pro-European policy is the only path toward change.

The Serbian Progressive Party won the largest number of votes in almost all municipalities where local elections were held. While the victories in Lucani, Majdanpek, and Kladovo were convincing, the situation is somewhat more uncertain in Kula and Sevojno, where post-election agreements will likely serve as the “decisive factor” in forming the government.

Zoran Vuletic, president of the Civic Democratic Forum, points out that the Serbian Progressive Party is the absolute winner of these processes.

"At first glance, I would say that the Serbian Progressive Party is the winner because, after 14 years of their absolute rule throughout the system, they govern in an authoritarian manner, while we still do not have a clearly formulated political alternative to such a regime", Vuletic told Newsmax Balkans.

He adds that it is less important whether the Serbian Progressive Party will form the government in all ten municipalities than the troubling fact that the opposition lacks a clear program on the eve of parliamentary elections.

Call for dialogue

Regarding announcements of possible early parliamentary elections and the call for consultations initiated by Speaker of Parliament Ana Brnabic, Vuletic believes this is a test intended exclusively for opposition parties.

He criticizes the responses of those who have in advance rejected any talks with the authorities.

"I think it is a mistake for opposition parties to have promptly responded that they have no intention of entering into talks. Citizens urgently need them, if necessary, to hold their noses, attend such talks, and negotiate at least somewhat favorable conditions for early parliamentary elections", Vuletic added.

The president of the Civic Democratic Forum stresses that the parliamentary opposition must formulate a clear pro-European policy and present to citizens a program that includes peace in the region and integration into the European Union’s security framework.
