President of the European Council: Serbia Could Soon Make Progress in EU Negotiations
The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, stated in Brussels that Serbia could soon make progress in its EU accession talks, given some positive assessments from the European Commission and the fact that its alignment with the EU’s foreign policy is somewhat better than before.
Costa remarked that Serbia is not fully aligned, but that there has been progress, especially regarding Ukraine.
"Serbia has been a very strong supporter of Ukraine, on a diplomatic, humanitarian, and military level, and is a very important ally in the Ukrainian people's fight for a just and lasting peace," Costa emphasized to the media ahead of the EU-Western Balkans summit, which will take place on December 18 in Brussels.
Emanuele Giofre, the Head of the EU Delegation, stated that Serbia has made progress in aligning its foreign and security policies with the EU compared to last year, adding that alignment in this area is one of the most concrete indicators of a candidate country's geostrategic orientation.
The Minister of Labor, Eployment, Veterans and Social Affairs, Nemanja Starovic, stated to Newsmax Balkans that Serbia has fulfilled its obligations and rightfully expects the European Union to fulfill its commitments by opening Cluster 3.
Pope Francis has appointed new cardinals, including Belgrade Archbishop Ladislav Nemet, the first in the history of the Catholic Church in Serbia. The archbishop believes that Europe is open to Serbia joining "this great community," emphasizing the cultural closeness between Serbians and Europeans.
According to him, an important moment in EU accession is the negotiations between the European Commission and the candidate countries, while another crucial step is the unanimous approval of all member states for the next phase.
"It is necessary to respect the assessments of each member state. Therefore, the upcoming summit, not only the plenary session but also the special working dinner, is a very important moment for everyone to openly talk face to face, ask tough questions, and provide tough answers to find common ground and open the path forward," Costa said.
