Parents of Vladislav Ribnikar School Shooter Receive Lengthy Prison Sentences
The judge of the High Court in Belgrade delivered a verdict at the Palace of Justice against Vladimir and Miljana Kecmanovic, the parents of the boy who committed the crime at the Vladislav Ribnikar Primary School.
Vladimir was sentenced to 14.5 years in prison, Miljana to three years, while the shooting range instructor received a 15-month sentence for giving false testimony.
Vladimir and Miljana Kecmanovic are the parents of the boy who, on May 3, 2023, at the Vladislav Ribnikar Primary School, used a pistol to kill nine students and a school security guard, injuring five other students and a history teacher.
The trial was closed to the public from the beginning, but the verdict was announced publicly.
The Chief Public Prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, Nenad Stefanovic, stated that the prosecution would appeal to the Appellate Court regarding the acquittal of Miljana Kecmanović on certain charges, as well as the length of the sentences handed down to Vladimir Kecmanovic and Nemanja Marinkovic, the shooting range instructor.
"We proved the parents' guilt and demonstrated that their gross neglect of the child and improper firearm storage led to this unprecedented tragedy. I am particularly satisfied that the court imposed maximum sentences on both Vladimir and Miljana Kecmanovic for the crime of neglect and abuse of a minor," Stefanovic emphasized in a statement released by the prosecutor's office.
However, he noted that only maximum sentences for the other charges the accused face would be adequate, given the severity of the consequences of their actions.
The defense attorneys have also announced they will appeal the verdict.
The father of one of the murdered girls, Andjelko Acimovic, commented that justice had been partially served, stating that even a life sentence would be too lenient for the Kecmanovic family, while the parents of the victims are left to grieve forever.
Ognjen Bozovic, the families’ attorney, stated that while they are legally satisfied with the verdict, no sanction can deliver justice or true redress to the families, as no one has been convicted for the massacre itself.

The war in the Middle East and rising regional tensions have once again raised questions about the role of the U.S.–Israel alliance, the military aid Washington provides to Tel Aviv, and the future balance of power in the region.
The war in the Middle East currently dominates the global political agenda and raises the question of whether Western attention could shift away from Ukraine, said Andrew D’Anieri, Deputy Director of the Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, in an interview with Newsmax Balkans.
