Peter Sorensen Appointed as the New Special Envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue

The Council of the European Union has appointed Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen as the EU Special Envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue.

Peter Sorensen Appointed as the New Special Envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue

According to the EU Council’s statement, the new Special Envoy’s responsibilities will include mediating the dialogue to facilitate comprehensive normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, particularly focusing on the implementation of the Agreement on the Path to Normalization of Relations and its implementation annex, adopted in February and March 2023.

Sorensen will assume the role from Miroslav Lajcak on February 1, 2025, with an initial mandate of 13 months.

Sorensen is a seasoned Danish diplomat with extensive experience, including in the Western Balkans region.

From 2006 to 2010, he served as the personal representative in Belgrade of the then-EU High Representative.

He also served in Pristina, where he was a senior advisor to the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General from 2001 to 2002, and from 2002 to 2006, he held the position of Deputy Head of UNMIK Pillar IV (Reconstruction and Economic Development).

Earlier, in 2000, Sorensen worked as a legal advisor to the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Balkans.

EU Special Envoys

EU Special Envoys promote EU policies and interests in specific regions and countries, as well as on issues of particular interest to the EU. They play an active role in efforts to consolidate reforms, stability, and the rule of law.

He also served as Head of the EU Delegation in Skopje from 2010 to 2011 and as the EU Special Representative and Head of the EU Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2011 to 2014.

Additionally, Sorensen has worked as a political advisor and observer in the European Community Monitoring Mission in the former Yugoslavia from 1995 to 1996, a legal advisor to the High Representative in Sarajevo from 1996 to 1997, and as Head of the Political Department and Senior Advisor to the OSCE Head of Mission in Croatia from 1997 to 1999.

Sorensen has represented the EU at the United Nations in Geneva, including as the EU representative to the UN Human Rights Council, and served as the Head of the EU Delegation in Geneva.
