Minister Djuric: Trump’s Second Term Could Revive Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue

However, he acknowledged that this issue would likely not be a top priority for the U.S. administration in its initial months.

Djuric emphasized that Serbia is prepared, when the time comes, to present the dire situation in Kosovo, which continues to worsen daily, involving ongoing discrimination, harassment of Serbs, and violations of their basic human rights.

"Belgrade remains committed to finding a compromise – a peaceful, negotiated solution that leaves both sides equally satisfied and dissatisfied," he said.

Regarding whether Serbia’s foreign policy neutrality affects its EU accession talks, Djuric underlined that EU membership remains Serbia’s primary priority and strategic direction.

Addressing relations between Germany and Serbia, he stated that the two countries share much in common and expressed optimism that, after Germany’s elections, "the stars will align perfectly for a new kind of partnership between Serbia and Germany."

When asked about Serbia’s expectations from the new U.S. administration, Djuric noted that Serbia has had diplomatic relations with the United States for nearly 150 years, mostly characterized by friendship, partnership, and alliance.

He recalled the difficult decade of the 1990s, marked by armed conflict with the U.S., but emphasized that this generation is working to create an environment where Serbia and the U.S. can elevate their relations to a completely new level.

"With Trump’s victory, Serbia and the U.S. are likely to become even closer politically than before. We maintain close contacts with many high-ranking individuals in Trump’s immediate circle and his new administration. Despite the clear differences between Serbia and the U.S. on some international issues, including, of course, the Kosovo issue, there is reason for optimism," Djuric said.

Regarding U.S. sanctions imposed by the Biden administration in its final days, which also affect Serbia’s oil company NIS, Djuric stated that Serbia would discuss the matter with Trump’s team and seek understanding and assistance.
