Chamber of Commerce of Serbia on U.S. Tariffs: Export Would Only Be Profitable with Tariffs Up to 10 Percent
If the entire export from Serbia to the U.S. were subject to tariffs of 37 percent, or even 25 percent, most Serbian companies would not be able to cope with that, says Bojan Stanic from the Sector for Strategic Analysis, Services, and Internationalization of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.
"We can say that the situation is very unfavorable, and that companies are concerned, as they are simply faced with the question of whether they can even survive in the U.S. market. Companies in Serbia that are part of multinational corporations can more easily finance certain losses in a relatively short period of time. On the other hand, small or medium-sized companies simply cannot function, and their position in America is practically unsustainable," Stanic said for Newsmax Balkans.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the citizens of Serbia should not worry about the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and that this issue will be resolved within the next three months.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic stated in a speech that he expects to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in the next 30 days, most likely at the beginning of May, on U.S. territory.
He also mentioned that there have been discussions about finding a new market for goods, primarily in Europe, but the ability to place goods depends on the type of industry.
"All in all, the concern remains, but there is hope that the U.S. market can be maintained, and for that, certain improvements to Serbia's position need to be secured with the support of diplomacy," he added.
He stated that the value of Serbia's total export to the U.S. in goods was 620 million euros last year.
"We have a slight deficit of 63 million euros, but the problem is that they report a deficit with Serbia of nearly 600 million euros, which is why this formula has yielded such a poor result for our country. Our statistics are aligned with Eurostat, which is the official institution for collecting statistics at the EU level. Simply put, our statistics and theirs do not match, and we want to base our position in negotiations on this, especially when it comes to services. We export almost three times more services to the U.S. thanks to the IT industry than we do products," Stanic pointed out.
He mentioned that Serbian exports, in a broader sense, are not at risk.
