4.7-Magnitude earthquake strikes area near Prizren: Strongly felt in Vranje, Skopje and the wider Region

An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded on Wednesday evening in the Prizren region, with the epicenter located approximately 20 kilometers southeast of the city. Residents of Vranje and Skopje reported strong ground shaking.

According to the Republic Seismological Institute, the tremor occurred at 10:05 p.m. local time.

Estimates indicate that the theoretical intensity at the epicenter ranged between VI and VII on the Mercalli intensity scale, meaning moderate damage to buildings in the epicentral area is possible.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are typically strongly felt across a wider area, but there have so far been no reports of injuries or significant material damage.

Residents of Vranje Report Ground Shaking and Swaying Furniture

As reported by a Newsmax Balkans correspondent from Vranje, the earthquake was also felt in the city, unsettling residents who reported ground vibrations and swaying furniture.

Residents stated that the tremor lasted several seconds and was clearly felt inside residential buildings, particularly on higher floors.

The shaking was also felt in other cities in southern Serbia, as well as in North Macedonia and Kosovo and Metohija.

At this time, there is no information on possible material damage or injuries.

Experts note that earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively common in this part of the Balkans and generally do not cause serious damage, although weaker aftershocks may occur in the coming hours and days.

According to available information, the earthquake was strongly felt in Skopje, Tetovo and the surrounding region.

Residents in Skopje reported strong ground shaking, while there are currently no reports of material damage or injuries.
