Incident in Botun: 54 People Detained and Then Released

The Police Directorate announced that Podgorica police officers took measures and actions within their jurisdiction and brought 54 individuals to official premises after they prevented officers of the Communal Police from carrying out their official duties in Botun today and refused to comply with orders issued by police officers.

The leader of the Democratic People’s Party, Milan Knezevic, exited the police van after spending several hours inside. The police stated that Knezevic left the police vehicle of his own accord, in the same manner in which, according to their claims, he had earlier entered it.

Knezevic said that he left the police van only after all those detained in today’s police operation in Botun had been released.

“I believe this is one of the darkest pages in Montenegrin history,” Knezevic said.

He had earlier stated that he would not leave the police vehicle until he was taken to the Security Center, emphasizing that he wanted to remain with the residents of Zeta.

The Police Directorate said that information is currently being collected from all individuals regarding the circumstances of today’s events, and that the Basic State Prosecutor in Podgorica has been informed.

After the information was gathered, more than half of those detained were released.

Representatives of the institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro were also present at today’s events, monitoring the conduct of police officers, with a focus on the use of coercive measures and respect for the rights of detained citizens.

This institution announced that, in the coming period, it will conduct interviews with citizens and collect additional information from the competent authorities in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
