Standing Working Group on the Safety of Journalists: 55 Cases in 2024, Female Journalists Targeted More Than Male
The Standing Working Group on the Safety of Journalists (SRG) held its final regular quarterly meeting of the year on December 18 in Belgrade. The session focused on security challenges faced by media professionals from October to December, as well as throughout 2024.
Representatives of the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office informed SRG members that 11 new cases related to journalist safety were initiated in October and November - three in October and eight in November.
From the beginning of 2024 until November 31, a total of 55 cases involving offenses against journalists were opened in public prosecutors' offices across Serbia. In comparison, 76 cases were initiated in 2023, and 87 cases in both 2022 and 2021.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted that significant milestones have been achieved in the accession processes of Serbia, Albania, and Montenegro during Hungary's presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Hungarian Ambassador to the EU Odor Balint stated that he signed a letter on behalf of the Council of the European Union, inviting Serbia to submit its negotiating positions for Chapters 16 and 19 under Cluster 3, which focuses on competitiveness and inclusive growth.
Newsrooms most frequently targeted by attacks this year, according to available data, were N1 with 13 criminal reports, Nova S with six, and the weekly Radar with four.
Out of the 44 individual journalists who were victims of attacks this year, 19 were male (43.18%) and 25 female (56.82%). This marks the first year since the prosecutor's office began maintaining a database that female journalists have made up the majority of victims of attacks and threats, the statement noted.
Regarding resolved cases, by the end of November this year, first-instance or final decisions were made in 16 cases (29.09%). The remaining 39 cases are at various stages of investigation and evidence collection.
Established in January 2017, SRG comprises representatives of the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office (VJT), the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia (MUP), the Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS), the Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia (NUNS), the Independent Journalists' Association of Vojvodina (NDNV), the Media Association (AM), the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), the Association of Online Media (AOM), and the OSCE Mission to Serbia in observer status.
